Greystones Community College hosts official Government visit to celebrate Europe Day
Europe Day was marked with pride and celebration this morning at Greystones Community College as the school welcomed an official Government delegation organised by the Department of Foreign Affairs. The event brought together students, staff, dignitaries and members of the wider school community to recognise the importance of Ireland’s place within the European Union and to highlight the opportunities that EU membership continues to create for young people.
Among the distinguished guests attending the celebration were An Tánaiste Simon Harris TD and Ambassador of Spain to Ireland, María Teresa Lizaranzu. On arrival, the visitors received a warm welcome from Na Leas Galláin Head Students Morgan Durston and Anna Dillane, together with Chairperson of the Board of Management, Cllr Louise Fenelon Gaskin.
The Europe Day collaboration formed part of a wider initiative by the Department of Foreign Affairs aimed at engaging young people in discussions about the European Union, its values, and the benefits of membership for Ireland. The visit also provided students with an opportunity to hear directly from national and international representatives and diplomats about cooperation across Europe and the importance of maintaining strong European partnerships in an increasingly interconnected world.
A central part of the morning focused on student experiences and participation in European programmes. Fifth-year students Sara Smyth Fagan and Isaac Carcone addressed those gathered, sharing personal reflections on their European journeys over the past year. Through Erasmus-funded exchange programmes, both students travelled to several European countries, experiencing different cultures, education systems and communities firsthand. They also spoke about the lasting friendships and confidence gained through these experiences and how the opportunities had broadened their perspectives on Europe and international cooperation. The students also reflected on a recent visit to the European Parliament, where the experience, they explained, gave students an invaluable insight into how European institutions operate and how decisions made at EU level impact the everyday lives of citizens across member states.
Addressing the assembled students and guests, An Tánaiste Simon Harris spoke about the transformative influence of the European Union on Ireland over recent decades. He highlighted the many opportunities available to young Irish people through education, travel, employment and cultural exchange, noting that programmes such as Erasmus help foster understanding, friendship and collaboration across borders.
Ambassador María Teresa Lizaranzu spoke warmly about the close relationship between Spain and Ireland. She referred to the pairing between Spain and Wicklow as part of the upcoming EU Presidency initiatives and highlighted the value of cultural and educational exchanges in strengthening European cooperation. She praised the students for their enthusiasm and engagement and encouraged them to continue exploring opportunities to study, travel and work across Europe.
Principal Ruairí Farrell said the school was honoured to host such an important occasion and praised the students for the way they represented the College throughout the event.
Music formed an important part of the celebration, with performances from talented students Mia O’Reilly, Ellie Walsh, Paddy Grealis and Leyna Sari Pierra providing entertainment throughout the morning. Their performances added warmth and celebration to the occasion and showcased the creativity and talent within the school community.
